In 1990 it settled in Girona a fluoridation plant (with hexafluosilicic acid) for the population's consumption water and it stopped to operate fifteen years later (2005). During this period the schools of the exposed area ceased the colutory program with fluoride solution.
To determine the effectiveness of the fluoridation of the water of public supply with the decay prevalence and the fluorosis in definitive teething.
Cohorts study. Random sample of children's of 6, 12 and 14 year-old of the exposed cohort and the not exposed to the fluorine of the municipal supply net (fluorine <0.3 ppm), according to the municipality of the boy's residence. The parents' informed consent was required. It was carried out an oral exploration of decay according to WHO approaches and Dean's fluorosis index. A questionnaire was included over dietary habits and fluorine consumption.
Dependent variables: decay witnesses and fluorosis stains.
Independent variable: exposition to the consumption of water with addition of fluorine.
The studied sample belongs to 687 children (exposed) and 680 (not exposed), with an sample error of 5% and a power of 90%, representative of the studied population.
The DMFT, deft indexes are lightly inferior in the exposed area. Only differences are significant in the 14 year-old children for the DMFT, DMFS and the decay risk), with a decay reduction of 26.8%. They were not significant differences for the fluorosis.
Moderate reduction of decay in 14 year-old children.
